Why We Like The Houdini Full-Zip Jacket
Always the ace up our sleeve, the ultralight, ultra-packable Patagonia Houdini Full-Zip Jacket is made with a lightweight recycled nylon ripstop that blocks the wind on summit trails and exposed rock faces. This jacket also weighs less than four ounces and packs down in an instant. The entire jacket stuffs into its own carabiner-loop chest pocket, letting us clip it onto a pack or harness when the wind dies down, or tuck it into a pocket of the smallest running pack. A DWR coating helps shed light rain when ever-changing mountain weather throws a curveball, and the one-pull adjustable hood tacks on protection from the elements.

It does NOT breathe
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
This is thing is good for stopping the wind, but you better be standing still watching a soccer game or something because there's only 5 Cubic Feet Per Minute (CFM) of breath-ability in this jacket fabric. For comparison, 35 CFM is recommend for backpacking and 70CFM for high output activity such as cross country skiing. Why do companies like Patagonia and Arcteryx do this? Because high breath-ability fabrics wear out sooner (because they're uncalendered) and they simply don't want the early returns from customers that don't understand what's going on.

This is the greatest lightweight shell jacket ever. The colors are great too. Highly recommend. I own multiple colors.

If I have to pay full price, I will definitely return. Superior light weight, superior windbreaker, and pretty good protection from light showers rain. But this jacket trapped sweat inside the jacket. I got wet clothes after running.

Does what its supposed to... Mostly.

Great little jacket. I just wanted something for mountain biking that would take the bite off my skin at the beginning of a ride but could also fit in my pocket or a frame bag once I warmed up. It is perfect for that and I also find it to be comfortable to just wear around town or on my way to work. The wind protection it offers makes up for lightweight fleece's warmth and it is way lighter - not to mention that I can put this on over long sleeves and it slides ride over whatever I'm wearing under it. I hate when jacket sleeves stick to your base layers and bunch everything up. I did size up to a large just to give better range of motion while on the bike since it is not a stretchy material. I am 5' 9.5" and would typically wear a medium if I was just hiking with it, but it still fits well and doesn't fit like a trash sack the way some of these jackets can be. My only complaint about it is that the cinch system on the drawstring, while being very minimal, does not function well and you will end up fiddling with it if you need to use it. Basically there are two tiny notches that each bungee strand hooks into and holds it snug enough be able to cinch down, but on the waist every time I pull the strings they pop out of the little notches and then I have to feed them back into the notches and very carefully cinch it down without popping them out again. The hood uses the same thing and for some reason works fine so they are probably just not a super consistent mechanism.

Solid work from a solid company. This jacket is super light? great as an add to a backcountry pack. Does well in a light rain, not going to keep you dry through a downpour? at all. Good end breaker and super light. Exactly what you would expect.

This is hardly a jacket.

I bought this for my son for a gift as he recently lost a lightweight Patagonia jacket. By the description, it says it is a jacket. It weighs less than 6 ounces in the packaging. I am so disappointed and would have been so embarrassed to give it to him. Now I need a more appropriate gift. I hope that I can find one.

Don?t like hood

Nice in every way except the hood closure (tightens behind head) - cannot get it tight. If there?s a strong wind coming at you, the hood balloons and does not protect well. Wish they would revert to a traditional ?perimeter of opening? drawstring.

Switched to this from Arcteryx Incendo
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
- Size Bought:
- XXL
- Height:
- 6' 4"
- Weight:
- 235
I had originally bought the Incendo Hoodie from Arcteryx, but it was too small (biggest they offer is XL) for my 6'4" 235lb body. I really liked the Incendo other than size. Overall the Houdini is great and fits the purpose well and size-wise fits me perfectly. However I really liked the side pocket on the Incendo and the button in the middle of the zipper for dumping heat during runs. If the Incendo was offered in XXL or XL-Tall then it would get 5-stars from me and the Houdini 4. Great product, but I miss the Incendo. If you are tall then go with the Houdini, but if shorter then go with the Incendo. The extra $30 is worth it.
