Why We Like The Astroman Sun Hoodie

Although it is named after the famous climb in Yosemite, Outdoor Research’s Astroman Sun Hoodie can be worn off the mountain. We wear it for sun protection while paddling along the river, hiking in the vast desert, or backpacking near jagged mountain peaks. This versatile jacket is a staple in our pack for all our trips.

My new favorite!

I have been wearing the OR "Echo" sunshine as my primary hiking shirt for the past 5 years. I loved it (still do) but ultimately decided I wanted to try something with better SPF protection. After seeing so many positive reviews for the Astroman I decided to give it a try. My biggest concern was that it wouldn't breathe as well as my Echo and make me hot and clay. But it absolutely doesn't! It has great breathability and the fabric is silky smooth against my skin. Although I haven't had it long enough to determine its long-term durability, it seems like it should be at least as good as my Echo (which lasted my whole PCT thru-hike). Currently planning to but a second Astroman. I've learned the hard way that if I find a product you really love I should buy two!

Size has slightly changed since last model

I bought the exact same hoodie and size in 2022. I snagged another because I love it and wanted two to swap on trips. The r2023 model is slightly smaller. It's not a deal breaker but I liked the 2022 sizing so much as it was just big enough to be loose on me but small enough to look sharp. I'm disappointed but still love the hoodie!

Great hoodie for general outdoor use

Awesome lightweight sun hoodie. Just a great product. I use it for hiking, trail running, river running, and backpacking. It works very well in all applications. Great materials and workmanship. Nice styling too.

My favorite Sun Hoodies!

I adore my Astroman sun hoodies- I've taken them up the Grand Teton, Mt Rainier, and all over my favorite hikes. It's very rare I don't step out into the Wasatch mtns or elsewhere without them. Extremely lightweight, wicks sweat well, and rarely gets too hot underneath. They're also nice to wear around town in the summer while out in the sun.

Needed a 2nd one in a different color - love these

This material is just a bit thicker/warmer than some other sun shirts, but that gives it more durability and the UPF will definitely last longer. (vs the echo or similar ultralight/thin ones) Take note that some silver/grey/lighter colored Astroman sunshirts are rated at a lower UPF, also. Still breathes great and a highly recommend it for sunny climbing, hiking, backpacking, etc uses.

Don't like sun hoodies. Except this one

I hate wearing sun hoodies. They always feel wierd on my body when I'm sweating and hiking. This does not and looks great too. Well worth the extra money to buy this. It's a part of my layering system for Aconcagua. This will be used for my base camp approach. Now I don't have to wear sun screen and I won't be all dusty.

Durable, Stylish, and Comfortable Sun Hoodie

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I purchased the Astroman for a 30 day expedition. Throughout this time, it spent a lot of time in the sun and rain. It did not get stinky like other sun hoodies do and dried quickly enough to rinse in a lake or river after a few days of wearing it. I liked the zipper on it for venting. I did not use the pocket much besides putting my earbuds in there or trash. The hoodie can be made slightly bigger to fit over the brim a hat, this was an adjustment for me. After 30 plus days of straight wear, it looks great with no tears or holes. The hem of the arms are slightly pilled and they could be reenforced in the future and thumbholes would be a win too.
