Why We Built The Backcountry Runoff 2.5L Rain Jacket
"We set out to make the best outdoorsy rain jacket, and I think we nailed it. It's breathable, easy to stash, and totally waterproof." —Gearhead® Expert Alex
Built with input from our Gearheads, the Backcountry Runoff 2.5L Rain Jacket does the three most important things we ask of our rain shells. It keeps us dry with a waterproof Pertex membrane, DWR-treated face fabric, and fully sealed seams. It also keeps us from overheating with high levels of breathability and the added ventilation in the shell's front, back, and sides. Finally, the jacket packs down easily into its chest pocket, which converts into a convenient carrying pouch we can stuff neatly into our backpack when the sun comes out.

Overall good lightweight design. Nice for layering or by itself around town or on the trail.

Not waterproof

I have to wonder if there's something wrong with my jacket. I bought this from the Chicago store based on positive reviews yet this jacket cannot be called "waterproof" in any meaningful way. GOOD: Very lightweight and packable; lots of pockets; hood is well-designed. BAD: Not waterproof and barely water resistant. First time I used it was with an umbrella and it felt clammy. Water wasn't really beading off the surface. The real test was wearing it in a light rain without an umbrella. After 20 minutes, water was seeping through the back and sleeves.

Just got the jacket. Very lightweight and packable; packs down very small, especially for the price. I can easily fit this into a sling bag over my chest for travel. Love that it has ventilation openings, as most jackets in this weight class lack any sort of pit zips or ventilation, and I tend to sweat inside rain jackets. Fit is sim but good. Sleeves are a touch shorter than I prefer, but I'm long and lanky. At 6'3 170lbs the large fits me pretty well. Haven't had a chance to try it out in the rain, but I feel confident it will keep the sudden showers at bay, and I may reinforce the shoulders with some spray dwr. My only gripe is I was really excited for the "kalamata" color which on screen appears to be a tan/brown with maybe a touch of green. It is not. It is straight up forest green. No brown tone whatsoever. Still excited for the jacket though.

This is a GREAT rain jacket. It’s more waterproof than most, and the yoke design adds breathability. But for those of us who walk in the city, or anywhere being visible is smart, dark colors are a poor option. FWIW, I’m probably not the only Backcountry customer waiting to buy a brighter Runoff; last year’s light silver colorway sold out.

Just got back from a 2 week trip to Italy where the forecast called for rain everyday. Packability and breathability were high on the priority list as space was limited and we were going to be on the move a lot. The jackets were perfect and took up minimal room in both our luggage and daypacks that we carried around town. The breathability was outstanding! With all the steps we put in, and there were a lot, never felt muggy or uncomfortable in anyway. Definitely recommend and will no doubt get lots of future use out of these!

I really like this jacket. I am 5'10 160lbs and ordered a medium originally because the model in the pictures is 6'3 and wearing a medium, so I thought I would have plenty of extra room. As mentioned in other reviews, the fit is a bit off. The torso fit me great, but the shoulders/ armpits were pretty constricting unless my arms were straight down by my side. When moving my arms, the jacket would pull back on my arms and it just felt really uncomfortable, even though it looked amazing. I ended up returning and getting a large. The large solved the constricting problems I was experiencing, which came at a trade off because now the torso is slightly larger than I would have liked. It might sound like I'm speaking negatively, but seriously this jacket is awesome. I have worn it on long windy and rainy runs with absolutely 0 complaints. The material feels lightweight yet durable, and the vent in the back helps keep everything cool. My only recommendation to the Backcountry team is to make the plastic drawstring closure thing smaller. It seems way bigger than it should be it is almost comical. Overall, I'm giving this jacket 5 stars for functionality, style, and comfort. If you are in between sizes, definitely size up. I would highly recommend this jacket above anything Patagonia or The North Face.

I picked up this jacket as an 'on the go' rain jacket that I can keep in my go bag, or in my office backpack so I can always have it on me on the bike commute. This jacket packs easily and conveniently into the chest pocket becoming the smallest thing I carry during my everyday activities. The fit works well for me despite having a bit of a strange torso, but has kept me dry during the first rainy days of spring here in Utah. The colors are fun and all the small trims are super cool!

Incredibly lightweight rain shell, packs small, had no issues with leaks or water penetration after a 3 hour hike in a downpour with one exception (see below). Breathability is good but not amazing. Main issue with this jacket is the fit. I wear a 16.5 / 35 dress shirt, and ordered a Large. This jacket has an athletic fit through the body (no issues) but the shoulders are snug and the sleeves too short. If I extend my arms out in front of me, even without a pack on, the sleeves pull 4 inches or so back from my wrist.
